Automated Training Sysems

The distance training is popular nowadays.

Distance Training System (DTS) is a method of training without direct contact between the trainee and the instructor. Such methods were available long before the computer appeared.

Modern technologies allow to organize the distance training upon the base of Automated Training Systems (training management systems) and/or Automated Training Courses.

Automated Training Systems (ATS) are software-hardware complexes comprising methodical, study and organization support of the training that is carried out upon the base of information technologies.

Generally, the following problems can be solved in the frames of ATS:

  • registration and statistic analysis of indicators of the learning progress: determination of time needed for the problem solution, total number of mistakes etc. The problems of the training activity management are of the same group;
  • examination of the trainees’ knowledge level and skills before and after training as well as their individual abilities and motivations;
  • preparation and presentation of the learning material, its adaptation by the levels of complexity, preparation of dynamic illustrations, tests, laboratory practices and the trainees’ independent works;
  • management of the system, deliverance of the learning material to the trainees and provision of the drawback with them.

Automated Training Course (ATC) is the structured series of lessons corresponding to all requirements to RTS.

The lesson is a computer document providing interaction of trainee with the system. From one hand, the lesson supports interaction with user, form other hand it provides drawback with RTS software-hardware complex.

SSL develops specialized training courses on the level of the modern achievements in this direction. The courses may be both independent “hypertext” documents with option of the trainees’ self-control and ones completely integrated into RTS with all options provided by the training management system.

In designing of the courses the system approach to training is used. This approach is based upon the analysis of future activity of trainee, generation of the proper tasks, training objectives and selection of the suitable study-methodical material.

The study material is delivered to trainee as the computer documents which may be browsed by Internet Explorer or Netscape Communicator. Thus, accessibility to the information is provided for the majority of the operation systems.

Generally, the courses are the Internet-seminars providing the users with the followings:

Instructor (teacher):

  • Arrange the trainees into groups according to the studied subjects;
  • Compose the training schedule and control its execution;
  • Organize conferences for the groups of trainees in order to discuss the arising problems in the real time mode;
  • Assess the trainees’ knowledge of the studied subjects.

Trainee (student):
  • Independent learning of the material;
  • Self-control by the studied subjects;
  • Discussion of the arising problems with the instructor in the real time mode;
  • Implementation of the tests.

Presented below demo-version of the computer training course has been developed using the experience acquired by SSL in designing of a similar distance training courses for the technical staff of a steam-gas power plant (SGPP) by SIEMENS Company.

The present course comprises learning material intended for the specialists in maintenance of equipment. Similar courses may be developed and used for the following trainees (except maintenance and repair personnel): operators, shift supervisors, engineers in different areas of technique operation. To browse the demo-version, the application “Macromedia Flash Player“ is necessary, which may be loaded from the address: http://www.macromedia.com/downloads.

The training courses may be both applied and general educational. In the last case, the audience, which the training material is intended for, is practically unlimited.
